Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) FAQs

Reviewed by Dr. Jeff Foster, Director of Men's Health
What is testosterone and why does it matter?

Testosterone is the predominantly male sex hormone which is responsible for male development through puberty. It also has important roles throughout the body and affects physical, mental and behavioural factors.

What is TRT?

TRT is used to treat men with low testosterone levels, which can cause a range of life-debilitating symptoms. It works by supplementing the hormone, helping restore you to optimal body functions and overall well-being.

What are the benefits of TRT?

There are a long list of benefits from using TRT including increased energy, mood, muscle mass, strength and cognition, as well as better sleep quality, more assertiveness and improved bone density.

Normal vs low testosterone levels

Low testosterone is a combination of testosterone levels and symptoms. When men get symptoms it is very individual and related to genetic factors such as androgen receptor type and other biomarkers. Guidelines state that a healthy testosterone level sits somewhere between 15-30 nmol/L.

Is TRT safe?

Undergoing testosterone replacement therapy is completely safe if you’re treated by a specialist doctor who regularly monitors your testosterone levels along with any side effects. At VOY we regularly monitor your blood results and symptoms to identify any rare issues you may be having so that we can manage them early.

What are the side effects of TRT?

As with all medications, some people may experience side effects - however, they’re easily controlled and generally avoided with sensible doses and regular monitoring. Some possible minor TRT side effects include fluid retention, acne, and hair loss. More severe potential side effects include gynaecomastia (the growth of breast tissue), worsening of existing sleep apnea, increased cholesterol levels, decreased sperm count, and an increased number of red blood cells which may increase your risk of blood clots or a worsening of benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). However, these conditions are rare and can be mostly avoided or controlled through regular monitoring and other medications.

Is it legal to buy TRT in the UK?

It is legal to purchase TRT online in the UK when buying through a private clinic such as VOY.

How do TRT treatments work?

Everyone's medical history is different so our doctor will prescribe a medication that works specifically for you. Successful hormone therapy involves getting just the right dose by the right delivery method for your individual needs. Testosterone replacement therapy involves taking prescribed testosterone medication in the form of injections, pills and creams.

Testosterone injections are the most common form of medication as they are convenient and most effective for the majority of men.

How long will it take to see results?

The time taken to see results depends on your individual response and the medication you are taking. Most men start to see benefits within the first 6 weeks to 3 months. We will support you all the way with advice and regular blood testing to ensure any changes that are required to your protocol are made early in your journey.

Do I need to take TRT forever?

We usually recommend a 3-6 month trial of treatment, after which your doctor may recommend stopping treatment if you continue having symptoms despite optimal hormone levels.

At VOY, we recommend the best treatments that maintain your testicular function and make stopping your treatment easier, if required for any reason in the future.
